CNN Cites Racist For Article On Obama.

(cross-posted at Kickin it with CG and Clintonistas for Obama)

Today, in a CNN article titled, "Could an Obama Presidency Hurt Black Americans?" John Blake warns that "an Obama victory could be twisted to suppress the push for racial equality" and cites several commentators -- including African-Americans, whites, Latinos, and conservatives.

One such source is Steve Sailer.

For those of you that are not familiar with Mr. Sailer - he is a columnist for the American Conservative magazine. Last year he wrote that some whites who support Obama aren't driven primarily by a desire for change. [...]

"So many whites want to be able to say, `I'm not one of them, those bad whites. ... Hey, I voted for a black guy for president"

"They hope that when a black finally moves into the White House, it will prove to African-Americans, once and for all, that white animus isn't the cause of their troubles. All blacks have to do is to act like President Obama - and their problems will be over."

A sampling of some of Sailer's beauties:

- African-Americans: "tend to possess poorer native judgment than members of better-educated groups. Thus they need stricter moral guidance from society"

- Obama's 'Blackness': "the brutal truth: Obama is a 'wigger'. He's a remarkably exotic variety of the faux African-American, but a wigger nonetheless."

- Michelle Obama: "sounds like she's got a log-sized chip on her shoulder from lucking into Princeton due to affirmative action."

- Katrina Victims: "Nor is it surprising that the black refugees at the Superdome and the convention center failed to get themselves organized to make conditions more livable. Poor black people seldom cooperate well with each other because they don't trust other blacks much, for the perfectly rational reason that they commit large numbers of crimes against each other."

Several of Sailer's comments appeared on the site VDARE, which the Southern Poverty Law Center has classified as a white nationalist hate group.

How the hell could CNN use Sailer as a source when he has a history of repeatedly made racially insensitive remarks? Shame on you CNN.

Oh and if you want to send good old Steve a message - here is his blog.

What the hell kind of outfit are you running that you see fit to quote racists like Steve Sailer in your articles?
Do you not even bother to find out who the "experts" you quote are?  Are you lazy?  Incompetent?  Or are you so desperate to suck up to the right wing that you'll quote any scumbag, no matter how loathesome, just so the mean, meanies on talk radio won't say mean things about you?
Whichever it is, you come out looking bad.

True dat!

I just sent them this comment (sorry for cut/pasting the quotes directly from your diary, but I guessed you wouldn't be TOO bothered by it).
________
To: CNN

In your article "Could an Obama presidency hurt black American?" you cited Steve Sailer's comment about white voters wanting to have voted for a black man for reasons of guilt.  Here are some of his comments you didn't cite:

"[Blacks] tend to possess poorer native judgment than members of better-educated groups. Thus they need stricter moral guidance from society."

"the brutal truth: Obama is a 'wigger'. He's a remarkably exotic variety of the faux African-American, but a wigger nonetheless."

"Nor is it surprising that the black refugees at the Superdome and the convention center failed to get themselves organized to make conditions more livable. Poor black people seldom cooperate well with each other because they don't trust other blacks much, for the perfectly rational reason that they commit large numbers of crimes against each other."

Regarding Michelle Obama: "sounds like she's got a log-sized chip on her shoulder from lucking into Princeton due to affirmative action."

His comments have generally been well received...by the racist community.

Perhaps the author of this piece didn't know that Mr. Sailer is a bigot pretending to engage in an honest discourse about race in America.  But he is.  And as a major force in American journalism, using his comments as a source is unacceptable.

Re: good one! (2.00 / 2)

I have black friends who call me 'wigga' all the time.

Is it supposed to be a racist slur?  If so, then I'm going to have to start kicking some ass.

And I agree with the sentiment that if the AA's in this country acted more like Obama instead of blaming whitey for their troubles, many of the inner city problems would fade away.  He's basically saying what Bill Cosby has been saying for years.  Take responsibility, pull yourself up, better yourself.  It's sound advice.

If many of you consider that racist, then I contend that YOU are the racists as you WANT THE BLACKS to stay down.  I can think of no other explanation for being so PISSED OFF that someone (this guy, billcosby, obama) would suggest that blacks may be respobsible for many of the problems they blame on whitey (another racist term, btw, but no one here would care).

He DOES sound a bit on the edge, but he is no David Duke.  He's just a pissed off white guy.

As far as the michelle comment, well hell, it was impolite, but objections to affirmative action are not racist in my view.

Re: good one! (2.00 / 2)

"Wigger" most often refers to suburban white boys trying to imitate the gangstas- flashing gang signs, rapping(or trying to), wearing the urban clothes, trying to sound urban black.
Not really racist, but definitely not a compliment.

Here is a link to the CNN contact form for submitting a complaint.

Here is the text of the email I sent them. You can get the segment title from my email.

I was disgusted that you presented an avowed racist, Steve Sailer, as a conservative writer on your segment on Black America -  Could an Obama presidency hurt black Americans?

A simple background check would have turned up some of Mr. Sailer's comments. Mr. Sailer is a frequent contributor to vdare.com, a site that the Southern Poverty Law Center classifies as a White nationalist hate group

You may have spared yourselves some embarrassment, if your researchers had bothered to use Google - http://mediamatters.org/items/2007031400 04

Re: CNN Cites Racist For Article On Obama. (none / 0)

I'm sorry, but I thinks its legit to quote this guy in reference to an Obama victory being "twisted to suppress the push for racial equality."

If he's one who might twist, then it's good to get the quote. Do you think anyone who wants to twist an Obama victory like that will have a good background?

I won't accept this guy as an authority on race, but I think his quote has a role in the story. Trying to lock anything unacceptable out of media is just foolish - just because its not quoted doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

my letter to CNN

Why CNN? why? Why would you cite Steve Sailer in your article, "Could an Obama presidency hurt black American?"

How can you cite a man that has said these things:[list of the spewage]

Mr. Sailer has proven himself a biased  journalist, emphasis on biased and I wouldn't even consider him a journalist. His previous remarks, and his contribution to the site, VDARE, which the Southern Poverty Law Center has classified as a white nationalist hate group is evidence alone to not quote this guy.

You guys are lazy. Sloppy at best. Did you think people wouldn't notice this man's past racists remarks? You owe it to your readers to remove his quote from your article. You should be denouncing Sailer, but instead you gave him a platform and let him continue his message of hate.unbelievable.

ay.

I have noticed a few stories on CNN about how African Americans are not supporting Obama. One was how some AA Ministers are not backing Obama. That story was really lame, like one guy who had a problem with Obama. I am sure they have pushed this meme a few other times but am too lazy to look.

How the hell could CNN use Sailer as a source when he has a history of repeatedly made racially insensitive remarks?
This is somewhat funny considering how many months this site allowed diarists to continue linking to this guy and several other Neo-Nazis and White Supremacists for their Obama smearing diaries.  In fact, several people were actually warned and/or banned by the site's administration (and by that I mean Jerome) for calling these diarists out as the racists they clearly were.

Re: Uhh... (none / 0)

Not off-hand.  But there were numerous (I mean, at least a dozen from a single diarist) recc'ed diaries here using him and VDare as a source.  Many of the now departed 'Pumas' used him as a source on a regular basis.  When some of us pointed out exactly who and what they were citing/sourcing, we were warned, told we were 'race-baiting' and attacking other posters...
